PREFACE

Growth and globalisation, two factors in present global economic scenario, have opened the windows for change to blow from across the world.  Accordingly, the Governments the world-over have embraced the open market trade policies with thrust on Foreign Direct Investment, export promotion through liberalization and deregulation.  In fact, post liberalization witnessed intense activities in foreign collaborations, joint ventures and a surge in exports. Therefore, today the primary focus of the dominant economic process is on harnessing the nexus of science, technology, skills and access to global market with the outcome for scales of economies.

The process of globalisation which started way back in late 1940s, has been expedited with the establishment of WTO ushered in a new era of global economic cooperation reflecting the widespread desire to operate in a fairer and more open multilateral trading system. The overriding purpose of World Trade Organisation is to help trade flow as freely as possible as long as there is no undesirable side effects.  It serves as a forum for trade negotiations and for dispute settlement between the parties.  The WTO agreement recognizes the need to secure for developing countries, particularly the least developed, a growth in the share of international trade commensurate with the needs of their economic development.  In the wake of WTO, the international trade has become a vital component of development strategy and is being used as an effective instrument of economic growth.

In the light of above developments, the book has been prepared to comprehensively provide specialized knowledge in international trade, particularly in the context of World Trade Organization.  Added emphasis has been laid on intellectual property, foreign collaborations and joint ventures and international commercial arbitration.

The book has been divided into ten Chapters covering International Trade and Trading Block; World Trade Organisation; Anti-Dumping Duties; Subsidiaries and Countervailing Duties; Competition Law and International Trade; Intellectual Property; Foreign Collaborations and Joint Ventures; Settlement of Disputes under World Trade Organisation; International Commercial Arbitration; and Export Import Policy and Procedures.
